At the outbreak of the First World War St Helens men flocked to join the colours.

Among the most popular units to join were the South Lancs Regiment, the Royal Artillery and, like the recruits in this photo, the Royal Army Medical Corps.

After training, these men soon found themselves serving with the West Lancs field ambulance among the shot ans shell of the Western Front.
