St Helens based referee Steve Ganson will take charge of the Challenge Cup final between Saints and Hull FC.
The Wembley final will be the 38-year-old first major game since Bradford Bulls took on theWest Tigers in the World Club Challenge in 2006.

Ganson's appointmenT as referee of a Saints v Leeds game earlier this season provoked controversy and is sure to anger Hull FC fans.

Stuart Cummings, the RFL's Match Officials Director, said: "Steve is our most experienced Match Official both internationally and domestically and has been Referee of the Year twice during his career.

"All appointments are based solely on form, and in the same way that a coach picks his best line-up for a final, I have to do the same and on current form Steve Ganson is the right man for the job."

James Child and Steve Wright have been named as touch judges, while Ashley Klein will act as video referee. Robert Hicks has been appointed reserve touch judge.

* Should Steve Ganson be allowed to officiate the Challenge Cup final?
