Mike Bennett is quitting rugby league at the end of the season.
The 28-year-old Saints forward has made 160 appearances for the club since signing from Golbourne Parkside in 1995, scoring 18 tries.

He sustained a shoulder injury in the 16-8 win at Hull FC in May and despite fighting back to full fitness, he ha
s decided to hang up his boots.

Mike said: "Due to my recent injury and after a great deal of thought I have decided to retire.

"Although I have received offers to continue playing, the specialist cannot guarantee a similar injury would not occur again in the future.

"After already injuring my shoulder on previous occasions, I don't want to get to the stage where it is hampering my everyday life.

He added: "My wife, Lisa, is expecting our first child in October, and although I would love to continue playing, I have to do what is right for myself and my family.

"I have received a great job offer from Cowley Language College, which I have accepted, but will continue to work for Saints as the club's ambassador."

Mike went on: "I have loved every minute playing for Saints and would like to thank everyone who has helped me get where I am today.

"Above all, I would like to thank the fans for their superb support over the years.

Chief executive Tony Colquitt said: " Mike has been a great servant and total credit to the game.

"We don't want to lose someone of this calibre and as a result he will be involved with us as a club ambassador."
