Paul Sculthorpe has almost certainly played his last game for Saints after being cruelly struck down on the biggest sporting stage in the world.
The injury-prone club skipper suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder just one minutes 58 seconds into Saturday's Carnegie Challenge Cup Final against Hull and was so disconsolate and distraught that he remained in the dressing room area throughout
the game and didn't join the rest of his team-mates when they lifted the trophy and collected their individual medals.
It's a further blow to the 30-year-old loose forward who over recent seasons has suffered from persistent back and hamstring problems, a ruptured Achilles tendon and undergone two operations to cure knee trouble.
Scully is due to leave Saints at the end of the season after the club decided not to renew his contract.
Lance Todd Trophy winner Paul Wellens said: "I am really shattered for him.
"I've played with Scully for a long time and despite his phenomenal success, he is the most level headed, down-to-earth guy you'd ever wish to meet.
"We will have few beers with him to celebrate our victory and try to put a smile back on his face."
Wello added: "Hopefully, his injury isn't as bad as first feared but things like this happen in Rugby League.
"Scully is a tough guy and I am sure he will bounce back."
Team skipper Keiron Cunningham, who lifted the coveted trophy following the 28-16 win over Hull, said: "I really thought it was going to be Paul's day and nothing would have given me greater pleasure than seeing him lift the Lance Todd Trophy in his last year at the club, especially after after the way he has battled back from all his injuries"
The seven-times Challenge Cup winner added: "We had also talked about Scully as club captain lifting the trophy with me if we won.
"I waited for the lads to come up and receive their medals and was looking for Scully but he was in too much pain to join us."
Coach Daniel Anderson confirmed yesterday that the player was due to have a scan but he had no further medical diagnosis on the extent of the injury.
"It was a horrible injury for him to sustain so early in the game and it left him shattered," Anderson said.
