A pair of sunbathers thought they could smell a barbeque - instead it was their house ablaze.
The couple had been lazing in their back garden on Sandhurst Drive, Rainhill, when they smelt burning.

After a few minutes they realised the smoke was coming from their property and their kitchen was a ball of flames.

The 29-year-old woman and the 32-year-old man jumped up and started to attack the fire with water from their garden hosepipe.

Their neighbour also joined in.

Firefighters arrived, on Monday afternoon (July 28), and extinguished the blaze.

It is believed it started from a fault in the boiler.

The kitchen was destroyed by the fire and the rest of the house suffered severe smoke damage. The occupants were not injured.

Watch manager Ged Sheridan said: "They stayed outside the house and did a good job attempting to extinguish the flames. Without their quick actions then the fire could have been worse."
