Former Olympic gymnast Craig Heap has paid a visit to St Helens to vault Carmel College into the London 2012 Get Set network.
Staff and students were officially inducted into the pre-Games education scheme to mark their ongoing commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic values.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) awarded Carmel with a plaque and certificate to acknowledge their involvement in the exclusive programme, which will give the college access to exclusive competition and opportunities in the next three years.

Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Craig Heap, said: "Students at Carmel College are excellent examples of how London 2012 is helping to spark young people's imagination and inspiring them to get involved and make a difference. I hope they motivate other young people to join their journey."

Carmel's further education sports co-ordinator, Jamie Hampson, said: "The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our students and staff.

"It also gives us the chance to link with other schools and colleges both in the UK and around the world to promote how we are preparing for the Games in our college and country."

From now until the start of the Games, Carmel plan to offer many different activities both through their enrichment programme and the curriculum. Among the ideas are an Olympic-themed sports day, the option of an Olympic diet in the college refectory and a wider range of sporting options for students.

Carmel's students also intend to give Olympic workshops at local primary schools and strengthen links with foreign students via the exchange programme.

Principal Rob Peacock said: "We're delighted to be a part of the Get Set network. The Olympic and Paralympic Values are the values on which Carmel College is built and for which we are so well known.

"The opportunities provided by the network will help inspire and motivate our students to reach out around the world and feel part of the 2012 games. I'm confident they will rise to the challenge."
