A St Helens man who learnt his trade as a journalist on the Reporter's sister papers has been named as BBC Merseyside's new drivetime DJ.
Simon Hoban, who also spent nine years working as a reporter at BBC Newcastle, worked for several years at the Leigh Reporter and Wigan Evening Post before moving to radio.

Before becoming a journalist, Simon's CV included stints on his dad's meat van and playing piano in a cabaret band.

Simon, whose first BBC show started last month, said: "It's brilliant, really exciting to be coming back. I visited quite a lot, so I've seen some of the growth, but coming back, it's really hit me. It's vibrant and buzzing. On the show, I'll be covering the stories that matter to Merseyside, with a focus on news, sport and entertainment."

Mick Ord, managing editor of BBC Radio Merseyside, said: "It's great to have Simon on board - I'm sure he'll be a big hit with our listeners. He's a really good interviewer with a biting wit and a good knowledge of news and sport."
