An off-duty policeman sniffed out a massive cannabis factory in Haydock - while out walking his dog.
The officer smelt suspicious fumes wafting from the house on Clipsley Lane and tipped off colleagues in CID.

They raided the property on Friday night (November 14) and found more than 1,200 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of £400,00
0.

Senior detectives have described the find as one of the biggest ever made in the borough.

Detective Inspector Chris Sephton said: "One of our officers called in about this after smelling the cannabis from the street while out walking his dog.

"This was a huge find - without doubt the biggest cannabis haul I've ever seen. The property was empty when we got there but whoever set up this cannabis factory was very organised and must know the area pretty well. It was a very professional set up."

DI Sephton added: "We are following a number of lines of inquiry to establish who has been using the property. We also carried out a full forensic examination at the scene to help us identify the culprits. As part of our total war on drugs we are committed to finding and arresting all those involved in this drugs operation."

Anyone with any information about the cannabis factory can contact St Helens Police on 0151 709 6010 or call Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
