The jury in the Maureen Marsh trial has failed to reach a verdict after almost three days of deliberations.
Shoplifter Steven Brighouse was accused of causing the death of a supermarket worker.

Mother-of-three Maureen Marsh, 57, suffered an aneurysm which ruptured within moments of the confrontation with thief Steven Brighouse, his trial at Liverpool Crown Court was told.

The checkout supervisor at a Morrisons store in St Helens, Merseyside, then suffered haemorrhaging and swelling on the brain which led to her death, said prosecutor Richard Pratt QC.

Brighouse, 34, of Gloucester Road, Parr, St Helens, admitted the theft but denies manslaughter and says he never assaulted Mrs Marsh.

The jury of eight men and four women were discharged by Judge John Roberts after more than nine hours of deliberations.

Mr Pratt said the prosecution would seek a retrial and Brighouse was remanded in custody until a preliminary hearing on July 28.

lock him up and throw away the key !
it's about time these people realise that they can't just go and take what they like and do what they wan't

release him and it could be another life lost in the next shop he WILL target for HIS addiction

i believe he did shove her and even if he didn't he was still shoplifting which led a lady who was just doing her job to take a fall and as a result lost her life

it should be zero tolerance with these type of people and society should stop treating them like they suffer from illnesses and giving them allowances, drugs are self inflicted and taken by choice - FINAL !

hope Maureens family can somehow move on with their lives once this is all over !
