Patients receive an excellent service at St Helens and Whiston hospital, according a report from a national standards agency.
The hospitals received a glowing report from the Annual Patient Environment Action Team (PEAT) after a series of inspections.
They were tested under seven categories and gained the highest possible marks for toilet and bathroom cleanliness, food a
nd food service, privacy and dignity, as well as achieving good results for environment, access and the maintenance of their outside areas.
St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust, which is in charge of both hospitals, was also praised for infection control and the successful deep clean programme, which was carried out earlier this year.
Staff were particularly pleased because the inspections were carried out during the massive £338m redevelopment of both hospitals.
Ann Marr, hospital chief executive, said: "We are delighted with this report, which reflects the hard work and dedication of our valued staff. Our patients are our number one priority and I am proud that they are receiving the highest possible standard of healthcare in a clean, safe environment.
"To receive such a fantastic report during our extensive rebuilding programme is a great credit to everyone at the Trust."
