Crime is falling faster in Knowsley than in any other part of the North West.
Police in the borough recorded a 29 per cent reduction in the number of incidents during the past 12 months.

Councillor Jackie Harris, cabinet member for Community Safety and Social Inclusion, said: "Crime in Knowsley is falling and there are fewe
r victims of crime in the area.

"The facts show we have nearly 4,000 people who are no longer victims of crime. That can only be good news for those working, living and visiting Knowsley."

Council bosses credit a joint initiative between police, fire brigade chiefs, Knowsley Primary Care Trust and themselves - called the Safer Knowsley Partnership - for the fall in crime. They also cite the creation of the borough's specialised anti-social behaviour unit.

A council spokeswoman added: "A number of targeted crime reduction campaigns, including engaging with local communities and distributing crime prevention messages, have resulted in success.

"One such example is a targeted vehicle crime campaign in the Southdene area of Kirkby. Free vehicle safety packs were distributed and together with high visibility patrols by the council's Neighbourhood Wardens and police officers and community support officers, vehicle crime in the area has reduced by 32 per cent."

Coun Harris added: "We will now be working to further improve on these reductions and to create an even safer environment for residents, businesses and visitors alike."
