Residents are being warned of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning as winter threatens to set in.
Officers from St Helens Council's urban regeneration and housing department set up a stand in Church Square recently to encourage people to sign up for a free gas safety check from their utility company.
Carbon monoxide is produced when appliances such as fires, heaters, boilers and cookers do not work properly, often due to inadequate ventilation or poor installation.
For this reason it is important that home owners have gas appliances regularly serviced. Coal, oil and wood burning appliances can also produce carbon monoxide.
The council has also secured a number of carbon monoxide detectors to be allocated on a first come first served basis to over 60s in the borough.
If you are aged 60 or over, or want to make a referral for a friend or relative who is, call the local home improvement agency on 01744 676555.
