Tommy Makinson will remain a winger for the rest of his career, if the player himself has his way.

The St Helens ace has deputised at full-back a number of times but watching the imperious Jonny Lomax in action has convinced him his future lies on the edges.

“Jonny is an absolutely great player,” said the 23-year-old, who recently signed a four-year deal to stay at Saints.

“I watch him in training every day and think that’s why I am not a full-back.

“I found myself at full-back in two grand finals, which was strange, and I think I played pretty well.

“But I am totally at home on the wing now.

“I can play centre or full-back if they need me there.

“I will play anywhere for this club but I see myself as a number two now.”

Makinson was Saints’ top try scorer last season and was named in Super League’s Dream XIII - at the wing berth!
