‘Wildcats loss spurred us on’ - Flanagan

Three Castleford players pounce to halt Saints star Mark Flanagan.

Three Castleford players pounce to halt Saints star Mark Flanagan.

MARK Flanagan told how two Saints defeats in a row spurred the players on to hammer Castleford 44-12.

A lengthy post-mortem following the narrow loss to Wakefield the previous weekend paid dividends as Saints ran in eight tries against Cas at Langtree Park.

Flanagan said: “It was clear we didn’t play very well against Wakefield – we gave them too much ball and didn’t tackle well enough.

“Everybody took that result personally, and that’s why there was a bit of a backlash. We just needed to focus on ourselves and each individual player doing their job and the result took care of itself.

“Our destiny is still in our own hands. And we still want to finish third and go into the play offs with some form behind us. Like Leeds showed last year, anything can happen in the play-offs if you hit top form at the right time.”

The 24-year-old forward also gave his backing to the use of shoulder charges in rugby league, amid speculation they could be outlawed.

He added: “I’m really in favour of shoulder charges. They are the things that excite fans. I would do it in a game, and wouldn’t have any objection if it was done to me.

“Nobody goes into a tackle trying to hurt the opposition.”
