SAINTS have lost a tug-of-war with Wigan for Salford scrum-half Matty Smith.
The 24-year-old former St Helens ace has been one of Super League’s top performers in 2012, and is out of contract at the end of the year.
Salford coach Phil Veivers confirmed Saints were in the running for the player.
But The Reporter understands Smith has signed for Wigan.
“I’m pretty sure he’s made his decision, and I don’t think it will be with us,” said Veivers.
“He has four offers on the table, including from Wigan and Saints.”
Smith spent four years at Saints as understudy to Sean Long, before moving to Salford.
Meanwhile, Michael Shenton’s future as a St Helens player remains unclear.
Hull HR have backed out of the race for his signature after balking at the cost of bringing the England centre to New Craven Park.
Robins chairman Neil Hudgell said: “We also expressed our interest in St Helens centre Michael Shenton, but the numbers involved again were beyond what we were prepared to pay.”
