CARETAKER boss Mike Rush says St Helens is the Barcelona of rugby league.
Rush, along with Keiron Cunningham, took over the reins at Saints after Royce Simmons left the club and followed up a 46-6 thrashing of champions Leeds by defeating league leaders Warrington in front of a capacity crowd at the Halliwell Jones stadium.
Rush said: “It is a dream for a local lad to be doing what I’m doing, and I would never say I don’t enjoy doing it, but the club has a long-term plan and my role is in development and making sure that we always have a conveyer belt of new players.
“I would love to tell everyone I’m a genius but it’s not the case, we have some very good senior players and very experienced players with hundreds of caps between them and they realise they have to roll up their sleeves and do some hard work during the week and get the rewards at the weekend.
“We are not doing anything differently. We have a culture at St Helens like Barcelona and Ajax play football and we as a town and a club need to play how we play and the senior players have really took to that and we are having some joy with it.
“Somebody pointed out that myself and Keiron Cunningham are both St Helens lads and in our next game we face Shaun Wane and he’s a Wiganer, which is great.”
Rush also paid tribute to his senior players in the club who were at the forefront of the victory
Rush added: “The likes of Josh Perry, Anthony Laffranchi and James Roby really laid a platform for us and Sia Soliola also made a big difference.
“We also gave Josh Jones a debut who was outstanding and I give credit to the senior players like Paul Wellens and Jon Wilkin who offer guidance and togetherness so they are not left to fend for themselves.”
But Rush joked it will be just business as usual for himself despite currently being in the hot seat at Langtree Park.
“I will still go home and do what the wife tells me to do and I will be on the trampoline with the kids and walking the dog - so some things don’t change,” he added.
