Bacup Borough 3 St Helens Town 2

ST HELENS Town returned empty handed despite a good performance in this midweek encounter.

The opening 15 minutes was a nightmare for the visitors, as they conceded twice to give themselves a mountain to climb.

Dale opened the scoring when he found space on the right, taking a touch before firing home.

The lead was then doubled when Bellamy’s effort from the edge of the area took a deflection, diverting it away from Brinksman into the net.

Town responded well and pulled one back when Hatton advanced down the left and sent the ball towards Olsen in the box, who controlled the ball before netting.

Just before the break, Town levelled when a period of pressure culminated in a left-wing corner being met by Olsen, whose deft touch sentit goalwards and into the net.

Town dominated the second period but their wastefulness in front of goal, linked with Roberts in the home goal pulling off some excellent saves, kept them at bay.

And the sucker punch came in the closing stages when a counter-attack saw substitute Maine on hand to turn the ball home from close range to deny Town a share of the spoils, which was the least they deserved.

Town round off their season by visiting Silsden this Saturday, April 28 (kick-off 3pm), before hosting Ashton Athletic at Edge Green Street the following Monday, April 30 (kick-off 7.45pm).
