ST Helens moved to within a point of the pacesetters thanks to a 14-10 win over bottom club Salford in a match played in similar conditions at Langtree Park.
Saints’ Australian coach Nathan Brown admitted he had “never seen anything like it” as his side held off a brave challenge from the City Reds to secure back-to-back home wins.
Saints led 14-0 thanks to tries from wingers Ade Gardner and Francis Meli before the Reds hit back with late tries by Liam Foran and Marc Sneyd.
The kicking of debutant Lewis Charnock proved decisive with the 18-year-old stand off booting three goals from four attempts.
“I have never seen conditions like it and it’s a credit to all those who helped get the game on,” Brown said.
