ROYCE Simmons, who succeeded fellow Australian Mick Potter as head coach of St Helens, will work as his assistant in Sydney after returning to his old club Wests Tigers.

Simmons, 52, who was sacked by Saints just seven matches into the 2012 season, his second with the Super League club, was due to resume his partnership with Tim Sheens at the Tigers ahead of the 2013 season.

However, the long-serving Sheens parted company with the club at the end of last season and was replaced a fortnight ago by former Bradford boss Potter.

That looked to have cast a shadow over the future of the former Penrith and Australian Test hooker but he was at the club today for the start of pre-season training, working as an assistant alongside Steve Georgallis.
