While Saints sit out the Challenge Cup Final on Saturday, Tommy Makinson will use the break to make further progress in his bid for fitness.
The wing ace returned from a lengthy lay-off in last week’s defeat to Huddersfield, and will be desperate to play a key role as Saints look to bounce back and claim a play-off spot in the final four Super 8s games.
“I’ve just got to keep playing games and work on my fitness, and we’ve got a week off, which is good for me to get some training under my belt to get ready for Leeds,” he said.
Saints’ task against the current league leaders looks daunting when they return to action next week but Makinson is confident his side can arrest their recent slump – and he has thrown his support behind coach Keiron Cunningham.
“We’ve been a bit unlucky but soon enough I’m sure we’ll get back on the horse,” he said.
“When Keiron speaks, you listen, and we always try to implement what he’s been saying out on the field.
“He’s a brilliant coach and a brilliant person to have around and I couldn’t think of anyone better to have in tough times like these.”
