St Helens Town CC remained second in the league and in the hunt for promotion to the Liverpool competition first division with a 32-run victory over local rivals Sutton.
Having won the toss the visitors invited Town to bat first on what looked a slow and difficult pitch and made a great start, reducing Town to 10-4, with Ray Foster and Craig Campbell doing the early damage. Danny Roberts and Ian Knowles then led the fight-back with a counter-attacking partnership of 51. Knowles continued to attack before he eventually fell for 57 with Town still in trouble at 95-7.
The long Town batting line up came to fruition though, with number nine Paul Meadows scoring 20 and number 11 Murgatroyd scoring 12 off just 4 balls as Town were 131 all out. In reply Town made the perfect start with Murgatroyd taking 2 wickets in 2 balls as Sutton were left 2-2 after two overs. A mini partnership of 30 between Greener and Onion gave the visitors hope before Davies picked up both scalps in the space of two overs.
From that point on it was all Town as they continued to pick up regular wickets, which saw Sutton reduced to 76-7.
A brief counter-attacking knock from Luke Hughes wasn’t enough for the away side as they were bowled out for just 99.
St Helens Town CC are 46 points clear of third place Old Xaverians and look favourites to clinch a promotion place.
