St Helens CC first XI went top of the league with a three wicket win at home to Birkenhead St Marys.

With rain about Town skipper Woods won the toss and elected to field and St Helens then went about their business with the ball.

James Davies and Phil Murgatroyd with three early wickets between them left the score on 20-3 before a mini partnership took the score too 55-3 before 18-year-old fast bowler Michael Stark came into the attack and tore into the Birkenhead middle order with five wickets in six overs leaving him with figures of 5-39.

The away side where eventually bowled out for 117.

Town set about the chase with a good opening partnership of 65 from Gaskell (32) and Knowles (30) before both where dismissed within the space of 10 balls which sparked a mini collapse to leave Town 80-5, a partnership between Stark and Roberts took the score to 100 before they where both dismissed leaving town 100-7.

With a tense finish in sight it took cool heads from veteran Bob Kenny and ex-skipper Matty Fisher to finish the job and see Town over the line and take them top of the league with a three wicket victory.

The second XI where rained off without a result possible away to Highfield.
