Rainhill kept waiting for promotion

WITH Rainhill only needing one win from the last three games to gain promotion, they confidently elected to bat against Orrell Red Triangle on the flat ‘Taig Hill’ wicket.

With their captain on holiday and three other players missing, Orrell were short of bowling options too.

The Rainhill batsmen took their opportunity with Veacock (36) and Atkinson putting on 73 for the opening partnership.

Waddington (2 for 56 from 17) and Smith (0 for 35 from 10) then slowed the run rate down and Qureshi (29) and Brown (22) were aggressive but it was the 104no from Atkinson that enabled Rainhill to declare on 221 for 5 in 51 overs.

In reply, Lawrence (23) and S Friend (32) both pushed the runs along but it was the 98 from Waddington that set up a tight finish.

Qureshi (6 for 82 from 25) bowled consistently but wasn’t supported by the other bowlers.

Fifteen-year-old Brown (40no) played an innings of maturity beyond his years at number eight and held his nerve to see the Orrell team to victory.

Their 223 for 7 came from 52 overs.

Rainhill will now have to wait another week for the opportunity to seal promotion.
