IAN Millward has spoken of the huge impact his controversial dismissal from St Helens had on his life.
The outspoken Aussie also revealed what is perhaps the worst kept secret in rugby league – that his subsequent move to Wigan was a disaster.
Millward, now boss at Castleford Tigers, won two league titles, two Challenge Cups and a World Club Challenge with Saints, before being dismissed for gross misconduct.
Within a matter of months, he took over the reins at bitter rival Wigan, where he failed to replicate the success his enjoyed at Knowsley Road.
“Mentally I wasn’t ready for the Wigan job,” he admitted.
“After the St Helens thing, that took a lot out of me.
“Looking back, I should have taken a break for a little while.
“Having said that, I had success here and I always thought I would be back at some stage.”
