LOCAL boxing fans are being given the chance to sample the final countdown to Martin Murray’s next big title fight.
The man from Fingerpost is set to face Trowbridge’s Nick Blackwell for the vacant British middleweight title on Saturday, June 18, at Robin Park, Wigan.
But the pair will weigh in for their showdown the previous day at the Park Inn Hotel, Chalon Way – and members of the public are welcome to go along from 2.30pm to witness the rivals tipping the scales.
Murray, who will also be putting his Commonwealth and WBA Inter-Continental belts on the line – along with his 100 per cent pro record – hopes the public weigh-in will give his supporters who can’t make it to Robin Park the opportunity to savour something of the big fight atmosphere.
The 28-year-old boasts a 22-bout winning record, and is favourite to make it 23 against his relatively inexperienced 20-year-old rival. But he’s taking nothing for granted against Blackwell, who is also unbeaten and, despite only having had eight pro contests, already has a title to his name, having won the vacant English middleweight crown last November.
Murray said: “I’ll be giving Nick Blackwell all the respect he deserves.
“I’ve trained as hard as ever for this contest and, as always, my trainer Oliver Harrison has got me 100 per cent prepared.
“I’m glad the weigh-in is being staged in St Helens, as it will give some of my local supporters, who can’t make it to the fight, for whatever reason the chance to come along, and get a taste of the build-up to a big fight.
“I hope to see plenty of them there.”
The bout is scheduled to be screened live on Sky Sports from 10.15pm.
