St Helens Town 1-2 Everton
Maine Road 2-1 St Helens Town
IT was a disappointing week for St Helens Town as they fell to consecutive 2-1 reverses in two competitions.
Tuesday saw the visit of Premier League big guns Everton to Edge Green Street.
Despite falling behind at an early goal from Forrester, the underdogs levelled matters on 26 minutes, when Kavanagh sent in a pinpoint cross which Olsen headed home.
But parity was to be short-lived, as Everton regained the lead less than 60 seconds later, as Higgins turned a left-wing cross home.
Town pressed and pressed, but could not find a leveller in front of some illustrious Everton legends like Kevin Sheedy and Duncan Ferguson, who were in attendance.
Saturday saw Town visit Maine Road, and good early pressure saw Quirk beat his man, before delivering from the right, with Hand able to lift the ball over the keeper in a congested area, to send the hosts into the break in the lead.
The second half saw the hosts come into the game more, and deservedly level when Huntley thundered an effort home on 70 minutes.
The latter stages saw Town spurn an excellent chance to regain the lead, when Quirk robbed a defender on the edge of the area, before feeding Butorins, who took a touch which allowed a defender to close him down, and divert his effort wide.
The killer blow for Town came in the 89th minute, when Kilheeney’s run cut the visitors open, and he found Brocklehurst, who turned the ball home to secure victory for the hosts.
Town host Silsden at Edge Green Street on Saturday (November 26) kick-off 3pm.
Admission is £5 for adults and £3 concessions, with Town’s multi-award winning match programme available for £1.50.
