GERAINT Thomas endured a torrid time in the first major race of the cycling calender.
The Newton-based rider fell victim to several crashes at the halfway stage of Milan-San Remo.
Along with Team Sky teammates Bradley Wiggins and Juan Antonio Flecha, he finished in the main pack, five minutes and 23 seconds behind the winner, Matt Goss.
At 298km, Milan-San Remo is the longest classic in the cycling season and forms one of the five monuments of cycling.
The race comes shortly after Thomas put in an impressive performace in the Paris-Nice tour early his month, where he helped Wiggins to a third place podium finish.
