ST Helens Town hosted league leaders Runcorn Town at Edge Green Street last Saturday and fell to defeat, but the scoreline did not reflect the game, as the hosts dominated for large periods and deserved at least a share of the spoils.

The opening stages saw St Helens press forward.

Early chances fell to Olsen, who first fired over the bar before drawing a fine save from Wills in the Runcorn goal.

Olsen then curled an effort inches wide of the right-hand upright.

The visitors netted against the run of play when Chart centred from the right, and Bellew applied the finish.

The hosts responded well to falling behind, and Berry’s effort was heading into the top corner until a deflection from Dalton sent it just over the crossbar.

St Helens debutant Cowderoy had to tip an effort from Chart over the bar, before having to block a powerful effort from Keddie, and the rebound from Williams.

The hosts threatened when Quirk sent a dangerous cross into the box towards Olsen, but another vital intervention from Dalton diverted the ball away from danger.

At the other end, an inswinging corner had to be cleared off the line by Flood.

Burns and Olsen both had efforts at goal, but neither could hit the target, and with time running out, the visitors doubled their lead when Spearitt centred for Carey to turn the ball home.

Hand latched on to a through-ball which split the Runcorn defence and he poked the ball under the on-rushing stopper to give St Helens a chance, but it was too little too late as the leaders secured the win in less than convincing style.

l Town visit Maine Road this Saturday, November 19 (kick-off 3pm), before hosting Squires Gate the following Tuesday, November 22 (kick-off 7.45pm).
