A BUSY Prescot road is set to reopen - just as another closes.

Old Lane was shut at the start of the year for bridge improvement work causing traffic misery for motorists.

But now as one closure ends, another starts with Portico Lane now shut for eight weeks until May 15.

Both closures are to allow bridge reconstruction while Network Rail carries out updates to the Liverpool-Wigan line.

However, fuming motorists have slammed the decision to close both Old Lane and Portico Lane at the same time.

Joe Duffy, from Prescot, said: “I attempted to take my grandkids to Ecclestone Lane Ends school in Albany Avenue as I do most mornings and the roads leading there were in chaos.

“The journey usually takes five minutes, this morning it took just on half an hour, probably made worse as there are two other schools on the same route.

“I hate to say it but it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or even worse as parents and grandparents are taking kids to school.

“This morning there was more than incident where kids were trying to cross roads and drivers who were probably already late and out of patience, were not giving way to them, totally crazy.”
