St Helens Town 3 Norton United 1 North West Counties League
ST Helens Town took all three points to give their survival bid fresh impetus in this tasty affair which saw three players dismissed.
The visitors, who had two men sent off. were guilty of employing what, at times, can only be described as an agriculture approach to the games.
But the bumps of bruises were worth it as the victory lifted Town out of the relegation zone.
Town took the lead when Ryan Taylor had tried his luck from the right of the area and the visiting stopper flapped at the effort being unable to claw it off target.
Norton levelled but Town equalised after the break thanks to a spectacular goal from Phil Williams, who dribbled past several Norton defenders before drilling the ball through the ‘keeper’s legs.
The second half was a somewhat calmer affair and a strike from centre back Chris Williams was enough to give Town the spoils.
Town are next in action tomorrow (Thursday) when they welcome Glossop North End to Edge Green Street before hosting basement outfit Stone Dominoes on Saturday (April 27) with a 3pm kick off.
