ARSONISTS have torched a 12-foot conifer tree.

Firefighters were called to a property on Rivington Road shortly after 11pm last Thursday (July 19).

They used a high-pressure hose to extinguish the flames and later reported that the house which the tree was next to had no working smoke alarms.

Watch Manager Franny Hill said: “People should check they have working smoke alarms in their homes on each level. The house the tree was in front of had no smoke alarms.

“If this tree had been set alight in the early hours of the morning then the people in the house may not have had any warning, as they did not have smoke alarms.

Firefighters fitted two new smoke alarms and carried out a Home Fire Safety Check. Luckily, there was no fire damage caused to the property and only a small amount of damage to the conifer.

Firefighters remained at the scene for about half an hour.
