POLICE arrested a number of men today following a violent confrontation in St Helens town centre.
It is believed the men are members of rival gangs.
A number were arrested shortly after lunchtime today (Thursday) near to the McDonalds on the Linkway roundabout.
Superintendent Dave Fox said: “The Force received information from the community that there was potential for disorder between two local crime groups in the St Helens area.
“Police resources were sent to the area to ensure that this did not happen and a policing operation remains in place.
“A number of men were arrested for conspiracy to commit violent disorder and an investigation is underway to identify and take action against further information.”
He added: “We will not tolerate disorder in St Helens and we will work with our partners to take robust action against anyone prepared to jeopardise the safety of our communities.”
Anyone with any information is asked to call Merseyside Police on 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
