Shoppers snapped up bargains as fashion giant Fat Face opened its new store in St Helens – its largest in the UK.
The store, in Church Square Shopping Centre, has created 15 new jobs with a further five in the pipeline.
It will be the largest of the fashion brand’s 218 store and is one of its first outlet branches, with bargains on offer all year round.
The very first customer at the till was Anne Speirs who treated herself to a hoodie. Anne, a shop assistant from Blackbrook, St Helens, was impressed with the look of the store.
“Although I wasn’t familiar with Fat Face I came in because it looks really good and I’m sure I’ll be returning. It is good news that another business has opened in St Helens,” she said.
Church Square Shopping Centre manager Steven Brogan said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Fat Face to Church Square and the fact that it is now the company’s largest UK store is the icing on the cake.
“We’re getting terrific feedback from customers, particularly those who already like to shop at Fat Face, as they no longer need to travel to stores further afield.
“It is also great news that so many jobs have been created, with more coming in the next few months, providing a great boost to St Helens.”
The new Fat Face store is on the corner of Church Street and Bridge Street in St Helens, after the company took over the former Burtons unit.
Richard Williams, Fat Face area manager for the North West, said: “Our new store in St Helens looks amazing, we’re really pleased, particularly as it is the biggest store in the UK with 6,000 sq ft of sales space.
“As well as stocking women’s and menswear, we also have children wear and footwear, while our Christmas pyjamas have just come in.
“The vast majority of our 15-strong team are from St Helens and the surrounding area and we plan to recruit another five employees in the run-up to Christmas so it’s providing a great boost to St Helens.
“There’s a real buzz around our store and while many customers are already familiar with the brand, others are really keen to see what we’re all about.”
Among the first customers at the till was Jo Brown, a big fan of Fat Face. “I didn’t even know it was opening here, I’m so excited,” said Jo, from Lostock, St Helens. “I was shopping with my mum who spotted it before me.
“I’ve been shopping at Fat Face for about eight years as I love the quality of the clothes. I’ve just bought a jumper, a sweatshirt and a polo shirt for my husband.
“I visited another one of its branches last week – if I’d known it was coming to St Helens I’d have waited. I think it’ll do really well here, it’s just what the town needs.”
Church Square Shopping Centre is open daily and home to a range of big name stores – such as River Island, BHS, Boots and Superdrug – along with independent retailers plus the busy St Mary’s Market. Details on what’s happening at the centre at www.churchsquaresthelens.co.uk
