Tyrers, one of the best-known and longest-estbalished names on St Helens’ high street, is to close its doors after 128 years of trading.
The Bridge Street store, which employs around 75 people, is one of the last remaining independent department stores in the region.
A family-run business, the store branded itself as the Harods of the North but had struggled in recent years to cope with competition from big name retailers.
Managing director Ali Tyrer, the latest member of the family to run the store, said: “It’s heartbreaking. The team here has worked so hard to keep the business going. My thanks go out to all my wonderful staff and incredibly loyal customers.
“I am so proud of all we have achieved but sadly, in the current climate, it has become increasingly difficult to compete against trends for out of town retail parks, chain store discounting and the massive migration by consumers to buy online.
“It’s been an honour and a privilege to have been part of such an amazing legacy. We will take so many memories away with us.”
