A ST Helens pet shop has become the first in the North West to be granted the prestigious Assured Pets Specialist Award.

Open for a quarter of a century, Clipsley Pets and Aquatics was awarded the gong by the Pet Care Trust after an inspector praised all aspects of the business.

Owner Paul Chesworth, 47, said: “We’re absolutely delighted. This stamp of approval gives the thumbs up to where we get all our animals from, where we send them to, the cleanliness of the shop, the care we provide if the animals become ill and our record keeping - as well as the day to day running of the shop.

“With the support of St Helens Chamber we also launched the business on the internet last summer and, despite having to tighten our belts, we’ve been largely bucking the economic downturn.

“In the last 12 months our turnover has increased by 20 per cent.”

Paul, who until last year combined work at the pet shop with his job as a boss for National Grid, hailed the support provided by St Helens Chamber as “invaluable” in expanding his business.

And, via their up-and-coming website, the Clipsley Lane store has even sent items as far afield as Canada and the US since the launch of their website last August.

They have also recently expanded their small animal boarding service, which offers holidaymakers a safe temporary home for their pets.

Paul added: “The key to our business is customer service. When people come into our shop we want them to leave feeling good - whether they have bought anything or not.

“We pride ourselves on being honest and impartial with customers and our staff are very experienced and knowledgable.”
