This gormless crook was captured on CCTV breaking into a fireplace shop in St Helens and stealing sentimental items from the firm’s staff.

Detectives hope the unusually-clear image, which was released on Friday evening, will help them track down the shaven-head burglar.

Carrying what appears to be a crowbar, he forced his way into Instyle Living on Boundary Road, near St Helens town centre, on November 29.

Police have yet to make significant progress towards bringing the offender to justice and believe the CCTV release will spur witnesses to come forward.

A force spokesman said: “The manager of the business was alerted by a security company monitoring the alarm after it was activated at around 4.30am.

“When he arrived at the shop he found that an unknown person had forced open a UPVC door at the front of the building to gain access, damaging the door in the process.

“Once inside the offender searched the shop and office before stealing an iPad with the words 'love from Danielle' engraved on it.” Nothing else is believed to have been stolen.
