A GIFTED St Helens teenager is bidding for stardom after progressing to the latter stages of THREE top talent competitions.

Self-taught singer songwriter Sam Caldwell is set to battle it out with other hopefuls in the final of St Helens Got Talent at the Theatre Royal later this month.

But the talented De La Salle pupil, 14, who rates Ed Sheeran and X Factor star Lucy Spraggan as his main musical influences, is also a Northern Stars finalist and a contender in the national Teen Stars competition.

He said: “I’m going to perform one of my own songs, Myself, at the St Helens Got Talent final. I’ve only been writing my own songs for a couple of months but I’ve got three written already. Although I’m also a dancer and an actor, music and songwriting is my passion. I was inspired to write my own songs by Ed Sheeran and Lucy Spraggan. I started listening to Ed Sheeran a lot last year and then Lucy Spraggan did great on the X Factor. Hopefully I can follow in their footsteps.”

Performing on stage at the St Helens Theatre Royal this Saturday (February 23) holds no fears for Sam, of Eccleston, either.

As a member of the Elizabeth Hill dance and drama school, he has already performed there in pantomimes - as well as in a stage adaptation of Scrooge at the Liverpool Empire.

He added: “People seem to like my music because it’s a bit different. It’s a mixture of pop, rap and folk. I don’t do anything without my guitar though – I never use backing tracks. And if I do cover other people’s music, I always do something to change it around.”

Sam’s proud mum, Sarah, said: “From the age of two Sam has always performed. He’s been in a lot of shows already but now his music is really taking off.

“I’m very proud of him. He’s very determined, he works very hard and is clearly very talented. He must get it from somewhere but I’m not sure he gets it from me.”
