TEARS were shed as a popular social club shut its doors for the last time.
More than 180 members visited Eccleston Social Club for the final time last Friday night (November 16).
Club steward Karl Leigh admitted that plenty of fun was had, but also told how emotions ran high as the closure deadline approached.
He said: “It was very upsetting. Some people took memorabilia from the club with them that they had been looking at for the last 30 years. It was very emotional.
“I tried to make a little speech at one point but I got so choked I couldn’t get my words out. It was a very sad day.
“I was trying to enjoy my 50th birthday and everyone else did their best to enjoy themselves too, but the closure of the club was always at the back of everyone’s minds.”
According to developers Jones Homes, members should still retain a glimmer of hope though.
A spokeswoman said: “Eccleston Social Club is not yet the property of Jones Homes and as such we have not made any plans for the site. When the site is officially Jones Homes’, we will work with the council to determine its future use.”
