FIREFIGHTERS tackled a blaze at a paper bank following a suspected arson attack near the entrance to a St Helens park.

Crews were called to a paper bank near the entrance to Thatto Heath Park, Thatto Heath Road, shortly after 10.15pm on yesterday (Monday, August 20).

The fire was still smouldering inside the container when they arrived and they used to hose to carefully extinguish the flames.

Early indications suggest that the fire was started deliberately.

Whiston Fire Station watch manager Rob Hamill, who was called to the scene along with the station’s White Watch, told how incidents like this were far from straight forward.

He said: “These sorts of fires are difficult to fully extinguish and can tie up an appliance like ours, which could be needed to respond to another incident such as a house fire for quite some time.”

Firefighters remained at the scene for about 45 minutes.
