VOTERS in St Helens delivered a resounding “No” in the nationwide referendum on the alternative voting system.

More than two thirds of local voters opposed the proposed change in the voting system from first past the post to the alternative vote.

The 36,753 “No” voters swamped the 14,682 who voted “Yes” to a change in the voting system.

These figures equated to 71.5 per cent in opposition to AV and 28.5 per cent in support.

St Helens voting patterns were matched nationwide too - where 68 per cent said “No” to AV and just 32 per cent voted to support it.
