St Helens nurses win health awards

A nurse based at Newton Community Hospital, a Cardiac Rehabilitation Team from Fingerpost Park Health Centre and District Nursing staff from Cowley Hill have all been praised at a local NHS Awards ceremony.

Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (Bridgewater) held its Annual Staff Awards ceremony on Wednesday 16 March at the Holiday Inn Express in Leigh and three awards were scooped by nursing staff based in St Helens.

The St Helens winners included:

Colin Davidson, a Nurse based at Newton Community Hospital who received The John Burtenshaw Award.

Colin is both a Healthcare Assistant on the wards at Newton Community Hospital and a Community Support Worker assisting patients in their homes.

Despite his busy role, Colin started a project to help educate staff more widely on Dementia using national Dementia Friends training. Currently he has provided Dementia Friends training to over 300 members of staff as well as to many supermarkets and local businesses in the St Helens area.

District Nurse Co-ordinators based in The Hollies, Cowley Hill Lane who received the Team of the Year Award.

The team received recognition for striving to work more effectively which has resulted in the service creating an additional 20 hours of appointment times for patients. The team has also organised a ‘Talk to Us Tuesday’ which involves staff contacting recently discharged patients each week to gain their feedback on the service ensuring that it continues to improve. Staff in the team describe themselves as positive, passionate and

motivated.

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Team based at Fingerpost Park Health Centre, St Helens who received The Patient Choice Award.

The team received a total of 11 nominations from patients for being helpful, caring and providing excellent patient care. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Team support patients through difficult times and provide them with the knowledge and confidence to better manage their condition.

“I would like to congratulate our St Helens based winners this year who have all made an outstanding contribution to improving the trust’s frontline services, going above and beyond for both their patients and their colleagues.”

Bridgewater provides community healthcare services in Wigan, Halton, St Helens, Warrington and Bolton; as well as a range of other specialist health services in other parts of Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside.

Nominations for the awards were invited from NHS staff, patients and members of the public in all these areas.
