St Helens MP Conor McGinn has revealed he has become a target of abuse in the wake of current Labour Party chaos.

Mr McGinn was subject a series of vile slurs after tweeting a message of support to Hilary Benn shortly after he was {|http://www.sthelensreporter.co.uk/news/local/mcginn-tweets-support-for-sacked-hilary-benn-1-7984398|sacked shadow foreign secretary.}

A number of the abusive messages related to his voting in favour of the Syrian bombing campaign.

The political drama was heightened yesterday when he was involved in a spat with shadow chancellor John McDonnell after tweeting messages of support about a number of former shadow ministers.

And the abuse got worse when he took to Twitter lambasting what he called “anonymous heroes of the left” for abusing other MPs.

Activists associated with Momentum, the left-wing campaign group formed after the election of Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader, have been accused of abusing MPs opposed to Mr Corbyn’s leadership.

Some commentators credit Mr McGinn with playing a key role in helping orchestrate the series of resignation which swept Labour on Monday.

His tweet yesterday, “Spent y’day whipping the Finance Bill & opposing Tory austerity. Anonymous heroes of the Left spent it abusing & threatening me & Labour MPs” promoted a flurry of offensive tweets.

Many of the messages are too offensive to repeat here but most directed vile personal insults towards Mr McGinn.

Just one of the hate-filled, cowardly & abusive messages I’ve had on @twitter today... for being a Labour MP #shame,” he wrote, before tweeting a screengrab of one of the offensive messages.
