Police want to speak to this woman in connection with a purse that was taken from a shop in Prescot

A shopper who pocketed a lost purse without appearing to trace its rightful owner is being sought by police.

Detectives say they’re keeping an open mind about whether a crime has actually been committed but are keen to speak to the women at the centre of the bizarre incident.

CCTV cameras from the shop on Eccleston Street, Prescot, show the victim buying several items before accidentally leaving her purse on the counter as she left.

A few moments later, another women entered the store, picked up the purse and left without speaking to the shopkeeper.

Police say the January 22 incident could constitute a theft if the women who picked up the purse had no intention of finding the owner.

Insp Kirsty Jennett said: “We are keeping an open mind about what has happened during the incident and are working hard to establish the full circumstances.

“We believe that the woman shown in the CCTV image may have been in the area around the time of the incident and could have information which could help us with our inquiries.

“I would appeal to her, or anyone who recognises her, to contact us as soon as possible.”

Witnesses should call officers in Knowsley via the 101 number or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
