Rush of blood over surprise visit
SOCCER legend Ian Rush gave youngsters at a St Helens football club a surprise coaching session.
The ex-Liverpool striker visited Parkdale Sidac to help promote the 2012 FA Community Awards, presented by McDonalds.
Parkdale were regional winners of the FA Charter Standard Club Award last year.
The former Wales legend watched a game and gave the teams a pep-talk before kick-off, and then took part in a question and answer session.
He said: “Grassroots football is the lifeblood of the game and we can’t underestimate its importance in communities across the UK.
“I can still remember the coaches to this day spurring us on while I was a young player for my local team and willing us to do well – and I was lucky that it was at that level, with all of the support around me, that I got my first big break with Chester City.” Parkdale coach Chris White added: “It has been such an exciting day for the club as Ian Rush is a real hero here and to see him with the children, talking about his career and having a bit of a kick about will stay with us all for a long time.
“Winning the regional FA Charter Standard Club Award last year was a great boost for the club and it was fantastic to see all of our hard work paying off.
“We live and breathe grassroots football at Parkdale Sidac so fingers crossed we get nominated again in this year’s awards!”
