Two robbers attempted to force their way into a security van during a bungled raid in St Helens today (Monday).
The crooks, who police believe were unarmed, targeted a transit van making a cash delivery to a business on Peckers Hill Road in Sutton at around 12.20pm.
However, the pair fled empty-handed after the vehicle alarm was triggered.
Witnesses say the men, who both had their faces covered, made off in a dark coloured Audi.
No one was reported as injured following the incident.
Detectives have sealed off the error while forensic officeers comb the area for clues and CCTV footage is examined.
Det Insp Ian Warlow, said: “This is a busy street and due to the time of day it is likely plenty of people were in the area.
“I would appeal to anyone who saw the incident to contact police as your information could be really useful for our enquiries.
“Officers are now carrying out a full investigation into what happened.
“I would like to reassure the community that we will do everything we can to find the people responsible and thankfully on this occasion no one was injured.
