A FORMER divorce lawyer turned clergyman is spearheading a St Helens-based church event.
Rev David Eastwood, vicar of St Helen’s church in St Helens is inviting residents ‘Back to Church’ on September 25.
The national initiative aims to challenge preconceptions about what goes on in churches on Sundays.
An average of 10 people came back to every church in St Helens during last year’s event.
Rev Eastwood (pictured) said: “It doesn’t matter how long you have been away, you will be most welcome.
“We hope that those who do attend will find the church of today an exciting and welcoming place to be, and a community that they are happy to be a part of. I think many people will be surprised at how it has changed. Church today is very much about doing rather than sitting in a pew and listening.
“We just want people to know that we are here for you whenever you need us.”
Church attendances have been in steady decline across the country over recent decades, but St Helens bucks the trend. Figures from the 2001 census revealed the town was the most Christian in Britain. More details from www.achurchnearyou.com
