A ST Helens car dealership is doing its bit to prevent motorists becoming victims of crime, by fitting tamper-proof screws and caps to number plates - free of charge.

Stolen number plates can be used by criminals to falsely identify vehicles and can be used in crimes such as fuel thefts, road tax and insurance avoidance and burglaries.

So Polar Ford, on Sherdley Road, are this month offering to fit tamper proof screws to all visitors to their dealership.

The scheme, run in partnership with Merseyside Police, is designed to alert motorists to the increasing danger of number plate theft.

Sergeant Frank Stott said: “Unfortunately, in these difficult economic times, crimes such as number plate theft become more widespread. So we are grateful for schemes such as this in helping the local community take measures to help combat the problem.

“Using the tamper-proof screws makes it much harder for number plates to be stolen.”

Phil Blundell, of Polar Ford, added: “We are delighted the Safe Plates scheme was so successful. Swapping standard screws for the anti-tamper variety is a very quick, yet effective way to deter number plate thieves and we hope to help as many motorists as possible avoid falling victim of this type of crime.”

Motorists who have not yet taken advantage of the scheme and wish to have their car number plates fitted with free anti-tamper screws should visit Polar Ford on Sherdley Road, St Helens.

Tamper proof screws will be available until the end of the month, or until stock lasts.
