A pub landlord remains in hospital after suffering a suspected punctured lung when he was stabbed in the back.
Police and emergency services were called to the Junction Inn on Junction Lane, Sutton, shortly before 11pm on Tuesday (December 10) after receiving reports that a man in his 40s had been assaulted.
The man, who had suffered puncture wounds to his back, was taken to Fazakerley Hospital where his condition is described as serious but stable.
A short time after the incident a 35-year-old St Helens man was arrested on suspicion of assault and public order offences and a 40-year-old St Helens woman on suspicion of public order offences.
They were both questioned before being released on police bail pending further inquiries.
Crime scene investigators examined the scene and CCTV from the area is being sought.
Detective Inspector Simon Draco, of St Helens CID, said: “I understand people living in the Sutton area will be concerned but I want to reassure them that a number of lines of inquiry are currently being pursued in respect of this incident, which I believe to be isolated.
