OPPORTUNIST thieves could drive off in your car if you leave it unattended while defrosting in the current icy spell.
Police are urging motorists not to leave their cars unattended with the engine running - and say there were several opportunist vehicle thefts across the region at the weekend.
A force spokesman said: “Never leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running even when it’s on your drive. This is especially relevant during the cold mornings and when defrosting windows.
“It only takes a second for a thief to jump into your car and drive it away.”
Officers are also reminding motorists that it is an offence to leave a vehicle unattended with the engine running and, if it is stolen with the keys in the ignition, the theft may not be covered by insurance.
