Police are now investigating a blaze which resulted in a woman suffering horrific burns.

Emergency services were called to a house in Johns Avenue, Haydock, at 1.45pm on Thursday, after a fire began inside the premises.

A 44-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man escaped from the house and were taken to hospital.

The woman suffered serious burns and the man suffered minor burns. Both are in a stable condition in hospital. Firefighters from Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service entered the property wearing breathing apparatus and quickly extinguished the fire.

The house suffered minor fire damage.

A forensic examination of the scene is being carried by specialists from Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and inquiries into the incident are ongoing. House-to-house enquiries are underway.
